I bought this calendar to beef up my child's vocabulary in preparation for taking the SAT next year. We read a word a day at the dinner table and make up sentences using it. We're all learning something. But I have to say, as an SAT tool, it's only so-so. Some of the words are likely to be useful -- antediluvian, say, or berate -- but some are just not going to show up on a test; fata morgana and ab initio, for example. I can't see myself using words like that in conversation, either. But there's not a lot of choice out there for word-a-day learning. (Maybe it's a fata morgana.) I know SAT prep materials include novels that use SAT words, but I found them too trashy. I think I'll keep looking, but for now, this calendar will be efficacious, for the most part.

I've been buying Word-a-Day calendars for my husband EVERY year for a very kong time - started back when they were available in local bookstores. No more! Thank heavens for who supplies them now each year. We both enjoy both time-honored familiar words and new and unusual ones. The explanations and extra tidbits of trivia are fun to read. Thank you, Merriam-Webster and !
I wanted to be challenged and learn new words; instead I get a calendar with (actual examples) Mosque, grog, ruly, hotdog, haywire, regardless, greasy spoon, comprise, slaphappy etc . . . it made me feel like a calendar for uneducated people. It might be good for kids, but definitely not for adults.
We've been re-ordering this calendar each year for many years now. It's a great way to build up your vocabulary, read an interesting story about the history of each word, and make "to do" notes as reminders on each of the pages for that particular day.
This is a practical, inexpensive and educational product for the whole family.
Don't waste your money on this calendar. I thought it would have intelligent and actually usable words for each day. Most of them are just plain stupid! For example one day's word was "golden parachute" one was "zillionaire" how about "dog and pony show" Dumb dumb dumb! Don't buy!
I like having the date very large in front of my computer screen, this part is nice. As for the words, they aren;t very useful. Some of the words like "hyphenate" or "putrid" are not words that most people already know. Other words are so obscure like "virescent" or "akimbo" that it would not be possible to ever work them into a conversation.
I was surprised when my son asked for a Word-a-Day calendar for Christmas, but, being a good homeschooling mom, I promptly bought him one. I'm not gonna discourage learning!

I have been amazed at his faithful checking of the calendar every day, and his earnest attempts to learn the words and use them in everyday conversation. He's had a lot of fun with this calendar, and I will probably make it an annual stocking stuffer for him.
The design for the calendar is pretty standard. However, I felt that the selection of words was subpar and not very thoughtfully chosen
- Some words are either very obscure or specialized, and others are words that already very common in every day language.
- Other words are outdated. For example, today's word was "mayhap" which is not only out of date but also a word that I would think that most people ordering this calendar would know already

That being said, there are some good words and I like how it gives context in how the word is used and sometimes background information about the word.
