America’s death wasn’t the work of a foreign power; it happened by our own hand.
Torn apart by a violent racial-political Civil War, America has fractured from a United Republic into an array of half functioning city-states under mixed forms of governance. In the Nation of Texas the onetime Lone Star State has degenerated into a lawless plutocracy, the result of an uneasy truce between the Texas Independents and Tea Party.
Duncan Anderson is a former tax attorney who wanders the charred remains of this once proud land, scraping by in existence through collecting recyclable materials. He is neither warrior nor slave; leader nor believer. He is but one man keeping his solitary distance from the bestial madness of the New World, standing silent vigil in hope that order will return again to the land.
He is to be sorely disappointed.
The arrival of a mute youngster throws Duncan’s isolation into chaos and life into danger. As the noose of everyday living tightens around his neck Duncan will increasingly do anything and everything to rid himself of the unwanted intrusions into his world- even if it’s a cost paid for in the suffering of others.

I really wanted to like this book. I enjoy speculative fiction and the dystopian vision of the future presented here is haunting and painful to read. However, I just could not force myself to finish it. That the character Duncan stands for "everyman" and is a product of his now-gone times is accepted and understood, but who knew the apocalypse would be so boring? Also, even the meanest of anti-heroes usually has some redeeming or interesting characteristic which allows the reader to root for him, but here I could not invest any care in this completely self-centered jerk. The three stars are for the nightmare scenario carefully crafted by the author wherein every flavor of crazy in America (and Texas, in particular) decides to rise up and stake their claim to the spoils. Unfortunately, through the limited view we are afforded by Duncan'd viewpoint, the reader really can't get a true handle on things. Sort of like if Tolkien had decided to tell the tale of the "Lord of the Rings" through the eyes of the tavernkeeper in the Shire.
This is a cautionary tale and timely given the polarization of the population and the increasing failure of elected officials at all levels to reach reasoned and just solutions. When the people are only kept passive with bread and circuses, what do you do when the bread runs out?

America in The Fall eBook Raymond Carter Cantrell Reviews
Reminiscent of the Road, deals with post apocalyptic survival on a smaller, more intimate scale. Filled with haunting, some times disturbing, imagery.
First I think the writing talent is first rate. The book is visceral and not for the weak hearted. A disturbing book in many regards. Hopefully the author will write something more main stream. I just don't think this is a book that will appeal to most. But the author is a talented writer.
I'm a big fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, and I have to say that this book is unlike most of the other works in that area. Rather than some global disaster, or zombies, or nuclear war, or a virus, what we're given here is a complete collapse of our economic system. The novel is constructed in such a way that it resonates with the issues of today. If most of the post-apocalyptic genre is a result of the Cold War fears, then this is a post-apocalyptic novel for a new generation, built on the circumstances in our lives today.
Definitely worth a look.
The old world is over...now you must survive the new one.
The world, as we know it, is over. A new world has begun, one where computers, desk jobs, and lawyers are obsolete. In "America in the Fall," we see the daily struggle to survive as Duncan, not accustomed to labor, is forced to scavenge for a living. Civilization has been restructured, now Hubs are the safe havens where merchants and customers go about business. The art of the trade is king in this new age; money has no meaning and less value. For Duncan, all he wants is to survive and recapture a piece of the old world. His life, difficult at best, becomes even more complicated when the `rules of the waste' compels him to care for a boy discovered while scavenging.
"America in the Fall," is a perfect example of Dystopian Fiction. The majority of the country has been transformed to a wasteland and only the strong or cunning survive. The feel of desolation, isolation, and depression is prevalent with each character as they wake to a new day of wondering if they will eat and live or starve and possibly die. Food and water is more precious than gold and silver in a land free of grocery stores. However, the danger escalates as Duncan works further away from the HUB. Bands of thieves or those depraved of human sensibilities are always on the hunt for a victim. Will Duncan be a victim? What about the boy? What will Duncan do with him? Will they survive or become prey?
From the first word, Raymond Cantrell delivers a world stripped of service, convenience, and comfort while delivering the strong will to survive that dwells within each human being. "America in the Fall" will leave you appreciating the food in your kitchen and bed in your bedroom from the first page to the last. With each passing page, it is virtually impossible not to think about how you would survive in the conditions the characters find themselves. The political aspects and how they impact the life of an average person is undeniable. It is these aspects and more that make "America in the Fall" a compelling book.
The strength of "America in the Fall" lies in the detail of setting and depth of characters. I recommend "America in the Fall" to fans of Dystopian Fiction.
Congratulations to Raymond Carter Cantrell on a terrifically thought-provoking first venture into the realm of dystopian fiction! Ask yourself after this read what *exactly* is it about those East Iowans?
Ok I have to say after I read the sample I did know if I would of read it, but I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did. It was a good book I can why it wasn't published. It is a real eye opener. It will make you think and to watch prepper videos. I have to say I wish there was more or if it ended differently, but I didn't put it down for the most part. Sorry about the spellings writing this review on the fire
This could easily be a four or five star post-apocalypse book. Only problem is the sudden ending which leaves too many loose ends. There doesn't appear to be a sequel so you're left hanging about the boy, girlfriend and the crazy city.
