Darcy Bright, a hapless young Australian artist, receives a surprising birthday present from his elusive half-sister Fin, ostensibly in Moscow on a prestigious fellowship painting industrial landscapes. Fin sends Darcy a ticket to the Soviet Union housed in a leather money belt, and an invitation to join her—only if he’s willing to bring the money belt and its contents.
Although their relationship has, in the past, swung between passionate attachment and startling disloyalty, Darcy has been drifting in his own life, and sees this as an opportunity for direction and purpose. Or, at the very least, adventure, and decides to put himself in his sister's hands, bringing himself and the belt into the USSR.
Upon his arrival into the bleak Soviet winter of 1984, Darcy is quickly engulfed in Fin’s mysterious life there, and he becomes entangled in an extortion plot designed to change the course of Cold War history. And as Fin’s true intentions for her brother unfold, the intricacies of the bond between the estranged siblings start to unravel.
With Stray Dog Winter, David Francis has entered Graham Greene territory, placing a naïve hero in the center of political intrigue and betrayal at the end of the Cold War. Atmospheric and suspenseful, this novel is pure Soviet noir, a remarkable tale of love, passion, politics, identity, and espionage.

The writing creates the correct level of tension and the intrigue is ever present. It reminded me of the excellent film 'The Lives of Others' about the East Germans but this one is a Soviet era tale of a misguided young man and his hapless sister who is involved in a relationship that places her and her brother in mysterious danger.
The contrast between the optimistic naiive Australian personality and the cold Soviet demeanor overshadowed by the ever present winter which unfolds with a lack of sentiment is well realised.
I felt echoes of reading Tsolkas's 'Dead Europe' - even the most sophisticated antipodeans seem to misjudge the complicated layers of culture, mistrust, prejudice and misunderstanding they confront when on the other side of the world.
Blackmail, sexual tension, art, family and other relationship tensions. Its here in a neat package and worth the read.

Stray Dog Winter edition by David Francis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is one I couldn't put down. Every paragraph of this novel was painted with his words. So beautifully crafted. I loved it! I want to see more of his work.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I really appreciate punctuation. Is this a new writing style no quotation marks, no attributing speech to a character? It's frustrating to have to reread a paragraph in an attempt to figure out who said what.
That said, the plot is interesting and the protagonist well developed. It's just a tiring read.
This book would benefit greatly by the author not indulging in some kind of existential post-modernist impressionistic avant-garde style of prose and utilising the greatest tool available--grammar. The absence of quotation marks or clearly delineated speech attributions (it isn't necessary to say "and so on," said Tom, for instance, just to illustrate in other ways where dialogue occurs or thoughts are or internal monologuing.) make this a frustrating and highly annoying read. It could've been great--alas, because of a desire to appear as something more than it is, this novel is barely average.
Read it if you enjoy your books without quotation marks or the like; you'll love it. If you enjoy books with basic grammar rules in place, you'll find it highly irritating. And that lack of grammar entirely detracts from the plot and makes the narrative collapse in upon itself.
Edited to add I also found the naivete of Darcy, the main protagonist, entirely unbelievable. I can suspend my disbelief quite a bit, but the author wants the reader to believe that somehow, in the 1980s, in a world where the pandemic of AIDS is rife, in Soviet Russia during the Cold War, this man wanders around like a little lost lamb. Considering the character's back story, the things he's seen and experienced, this innocence is completely illogical and very grating. Adding in the world weary sister, Fin, who attempts to add to the innocence by not actually telling him *anything* of value... these are unlikable characters in a world full of shadows. Paired with the grammar issues, this makes the novel unenjoyable and unrealistic.
I found the writing of this novel to be unusual and very fascinating. I was amazed how this author could keep me on the edge of my seat for such long periods without repeating words or phrases. Quite a feat in my opinion.
His characters were all fully drawn and so interesting.
The plot was great and very satisfying.
I very highly recommend this novel for people that like the Cold War era, Russia and never being sure of who's up to what.
Yes I enjoyed it but in some places I found it heavy going. Some of the harddship of the russian winter made me want to squirm but it had a true feeling about it.
It is rare to find a book this thrilling (I couldn't put it down) and this well written. The language is simple and evocative, the characters burst from the pages, and a sense of danger hangs over everything. Do yourself a favor, buy this book.
The writing creates the correct level of tension and the intrigue is ever present.
